Capsule Wardrobe to Capsule Planning
I've been focused on Capsule Planning for over the past four years or so, I have made it my personal mission statement to “minimize the crap”. This journey started with my closet at home, implementing wardrobe concepts like creating a capsule wardrobe into my life. The goal was simple, get rid of the extra stuff and leave standing a well-curated wardrobe. I stuck with the basics and added in the pieces I had always coveted. I will also show you how I translated the same concept into my personal capsule planning style.
PART I: CREATING A CAPSULE WARDROBE
THE FIRST TASK: CHOOSE THE COLOR PALETTE
I made sure to stick with colors I felt most like myself in: black, white, gray, and nude.
The SECOND TASK: EMPTY OUT THE CLOSET
I emptied out the entire closet and only added back the items that fit in the above color palette and that fit properly.
THE THIRD TASK: PURGE & RECYCLE
I tossed the items that weren’t in the best condition, and donated or sold the items that were still in great condition, but hadn’t been worn in the past year, fit properly, and/or didn’t fit in my capsule color palette.
THE FOURTH TASK: SET A BUDGET & REINVEST
With the money I made from purging and after I determined what my wardrobe budget would be I added a few items to my closet:
a basic leather tote
a leather cross body bag
a basic pair of leather booties
a pair of leather flats
a basic black pump
a pair of athletic shoes
card holder,
3 pairs of jeans (black, darkwash, and cropped darkwash)
6 basic t-shirts (nude, 2 black, 2 white, gray)
a black and white silk blouse
a pencil skirt
an lbd (little black dress)
a leather cross body bag
a basic pair of leather booties
a pair of leather flats
a basic black pump
a pair of athletic shoes
card holder,
3 pairs of jeans (black, darkwash, and cropped darkwash)
6 basic t-shirts (nude, 2 black, 2 white, gray)
a black and white silk blouse
a pencil skirt
an lbd (little black dress)
RESULTS: eliminated decision fatigue whilst getting ready, allowed me to have a closet that fit my personality and body type, and allowed me to focus on quality pieces rather than quantity.
PART II: HOW I TRANSLATED THE CAPSULE WARDROBE CONCEPT TO CAPSULE PLANNING
THE FIRST TASK: CHOOSE YOUR PALETTE & PLANNING STYLE
I chose a palette that allowed me to read all my plans and doodles clearly (black, gray, and the occasional blush orchid pink). I chose a minimal layout: black or gray words on primarily white paper. I know I appreciated nice writing tools and leaned more toward fineliners and gel pens with muted ink colors.
THE SECONDS TASK: PURGE THE ITEMS THAT NO LONGER FIT MY NEEDS
I tossed out flimsy Target One Spot items and traded them in for notepads like this, and got rid of, or gifted, brightly colored planning supplies that no longer fit my aesthetic. GOODBYE WASHI TAPE (unless it's black).
THE THIRD TASK: CHOOSE THE BINDER OR PLANNER SYSTEM THAT BEST FIT YOUR NEEDS
I discovered that I loved spiral-bound planners, but wanted something more customizable. I also wanted the durability of a binder like system, but wanted to make sure it was something that could stand getting lugged around to meetings, taken out of town, and shoved in my handbag.
THE FOURTH TASK: CHOOSE HOW YOU WANT TO PLAN OR DOCUMENT YOUR DAILY HAPPENINGS.
I chose tools that fit within my color palette and chose the following inserts: a vertical weekly layout in a basic black a white. I realized in my old planning layouts I primary used sticky notes and hand lettering to “decorate my pages”. So here are the supplies I chose.
CLOTH & PAPER INSERTS-I needed black or gray words on predominately white paper
Twiliner Soft highlighter in Gray
Zebra Saras AirGrip Rollerball Pen
One care-free gel pen with a .38mm tip (easily replaceable)
Marvy Le Pen in Orchid and Gray
Sticky Notes (here, here, here, and here)

RESULTS: More streamlined planning process, less cluttered pages, sticking to a single color palette could alleviate regrettable purchases, more ticks off my to-do list.
