How to Create a Financial Planner

If there’s one important (and rewarding) aspect of personal planning, it’s getting finances in order. We’re excited to delve into our Financial Insert Bundle along with tips on creating a financial planner so that you’re prepared for success!

Assembling the Planner

While creating your financial planner, consider the best route for your needs. Will you be taking it on-the-go, or referring to it at home? For a quick and portable set-up, the Textured Plastic Binder | Personal is a great starting point. Since it already includes rings, you’ll just need the inserts. For a more in-depth and involved financial planner, consider the Beginner Planner Bundle | Discbound Half Letter. This will come with dividers, undated inserts, task inserts, and more, ready for a quick set up. With either set-up, you’ll then need to add the Financial Insert Bundle. This will have everything you need to kick off your new financial planning! It’d be beneficial to also use blank dividers or blank tab sticky notes as the financial bundle can then be sectioned off and organized according to your financial planning routine. 

Using the Financial Bundle

Our financial bundle offers a neat and comprehensive look into your finances. Sections include: Monthly Budget, Recurring Payments, Expense Log, Nonessential Spending, Savings Challenge, Portfolio Allocation, Financial Reflection, and Resources & Tools. These could be divided by each section, or your dividers could be labeled with umbrellas such as “Monthly”, “Savings + Investments”, and “Resources”.

I like to use my financial planner alongside my daily planner. Within my monthly calendar, I use a highlighter to signify something needs to be referred to back to in my financial planning. These items are typically relating to the Expense Log, which can then be transferred to other parts of the bundle as necessary. All logs should then be referenced in the Reflect Monthly section. For me, this section serves as an overview for each month, as I can easily refer to it while preparing my next month’s budget and financial goals.

If you like to carry your financial planner with you, the Resources & Tools section may be best left in a secure place, as this section allows you to keep track of sensitive information relating to your finances such as accounts and passwords.

If you use the Dated Vertical Weekly Inserts, the Financial Bundle’s Monthly Budget section works well in tandem with your Monthly Overview – you can use information from your Bills Due to refer to when determining your monthly budget.

Don’t forget to factor in your Recurring Payments and Nonessential Spending – both areas of financial planning that often get overlooked. Refer to the previous month’s nonessentials and weigh if any adjustments need to be made to your budget. For recurring payments (such as bills, subscriptions, and your income), take these into consideration when creating your monthly budget. They can be easily managed and adjusted accordingly month-to-month with the minimalist overview.

Your Savings Challenge and Portfolio Allocation sections fit well together as one area of financial planning – keeping track of these important areas will help develop your finances. Of course, all sections should be factored in when you circle back to your Monthly Budget each month.
