Setting Your Intentions for the Month
This summer, we focused on improving our mental health and rediscovered the joy of simply being. We looked into ways to recharge and enjoy the season's warmth. As the calendar turns to August, many of us are already thinking ahead. But first, let's take some time to reflect on what we've learned and apply it to something meaningful.
This week, we're celebrating August by exploring the power of "Intention setting." We'll harness the wisdom and clarity we've gained over the summer to set our course for the months ahead.
Unveiling Your Core Values
Our core values, like ourselves, are constantly evolving and changing. When we take the time to check in with them, we ensure that our decisions and actions reflect who we truly are. This alignment brings peace and ease into our lives.
If you are new to this, you may wonder if you have ever considered them before. Chances are, you have! We all have values that guide us, even if we haven't explicitly stated them.
Have you ever had that nagging feeling that something you said or did wasn't quite right? That's your values talking! Reflecting on our values is like checking in with our inner compass. It helps us realign our choices with who we truly are.
Start by reflecting on the values that guide your life today. What principles resonate most deeply with you? What truths hold deep meaning for you? As you set your intentions this month, consider how they harmonize with your core values.
To help you uncover this alignment, explore these journaling prompts:
- What experiences brought me the most joy? What values were present in those moments?
- What challenges did I face this summer? What values helped me navigate them?
- What did I learn about myself recently? How does that new understanding align with my existing values?
- What values do I wish to continue embodying?
- What values do I want to prioritize for August and beyond?
When you have your list of core values in hand, take a moment to prioritize them. Which values are most important to you right now? Which ones feel most aligned with the person you want to become? You'll not only have a clear direction for your actions but also a deeper understanding of why these intentions matter to you.
Your Tools for Present Awareness
It's easy to get caught up in endless lists and schedules, but remember that your planner is a tool to help you live your life, not dictate it. If your planner becomes overwhelming, it may be taking you away from the present moment.
The good news is, cultivating presence doesn't require a complete life overhaul. Instead, try incorporating a few simple planning tools and practices that can gently guide you back to the here and now. These tools don’t require hours of dedication; they’re small shifts that anyone can apply to their daily routine.

Cultivating Presence Through Intentions
Now that you've identified your core values and chosen a tool, let's connect them to your intentions. Instead of vague intentions like "be happier" or "be more present," create specific intentions that are directly related to what is most important to you.
-
If you value authenticity, you may intend to express your true feelings and opinions with confidence and kindness. As a goal, it would read "By the end of August, I will have learned and practiced three new techniques for expressing my thoughts and feelings with confidence and kindness." In your planner, feel free to write down your experience when you have or have not practiced this habit.
-
If you value personal growth, you might set an intention to dedicate 15 minutes each day to learning something new or expanding your knowledge on a few topics.
- If you value connection, you may intend to spend more time with loved ones, engaging in meaningful conversations and activities.
Sometimes our good intentions do not work as we hoped. You may have planned to "exercise more," but after a few weeks, you realize that your schedule is busier than expected, and you're struggling to find time for this habit. Instead of becoming discouraged or abandoning your intention altogether, you can make some changes.
You could modify the frequency or type of exercise. You can also change your intention to "Move my body in a way that feels good each day." This could include dancing, gardening, or playing with your kids.
By making these adjustments, you're not abandoning your original intention; you're simply adapting it to fit your current reality. This flexibility allows you to stay on track with your goals while honoring your needs and boundaries.
Let Your Intentions Guide Your Growth
Aligning your August goals with what truly matters can totally change how you feel about life. By focusing on your core values and being present, you're setting yourself up for an amazing journey. Create intentions that excite you and watch how they shape your days.
